“Scientific researchers are investigating nature’s role in mental health at a time when humans are more distanced from the natural world than ever, an environmental context where humans are increasingly becoming part of the machine. So far, the results suggest that we have completely underestimated the way in which the human brain is influenced by its physical environment and, in particular, by the elements of the natural worlds of water, vegetation and animals.”

Harvard biologist Edward Wilson redefined the concept of biophilia, as “the innately emotional affiliation of human beings to other living organisms.  Wilson observed that nature uniquely influenced the human mind, having the potential to influence the matters that mental-health-care providers concern themselves with: cognitions and behaviors.  In fact, Researchers have found that just viewing nature can release dopamines, triggering feelings of wellness and positivity.

And it’s more important now more than ever to do get outside, where you can do your best thinking. According to Your Brain on Nature, “Stress hormones can compromise immune defense; in particular, the activities of frontline defenders, such as antiviral killer cells, are suppressed by stress hormones. Since being in nature can lower stress hormone production and elevate mood states, its not surprising that it also influences markers of immune system strength.”
